How do you create your reality?
So how does one create their own reality? Well, how are you creating your reality right now? Your mind is responding to the information conveyed to you by your senses. These physical impulses are assembled by your mind into your own personal subjective reality.
How You Change Your Reality
There are three main ways to change your reality. The first and most conventional way is to manipulate objects in the world. Second you can change the meaning of objects in the world. And third, you can continually focus you attention on a subset of ideas or things in the world, and then reinterpret your world in terms of those objects or ideas.
Which method of creating your own reality is best? Well, that depends on your purpose. How you use these methods is up to you. Think of the methods described above as a set of tools in your personal toolbox that can help you navigate your life. Let's talk about each one in turn.
Manipulating Objects in the World
Changing your life by physically manipulating the objects in your life situation is the most obvious way to change your life. Interestingly, this method is also the most difficult. You might have an excellent plan, use all your physical strength, utilize your personal network of friends and experts, and yet still fail to reach your goal. Even with a lifetime of concerted effort, there is no guarantee that you will reach your goal. And worse, if your happiness depends on reaching your goal, then you are potentially setting yourself up for a lifetime of misery and hardship.
Changing the Meaning of Facts in the Word
Our stories about the world give meaning to the facts in the world. The objective facts of reality are morally neutral. There is no fact that is inherently good or bad. In other words, "nature is neutral". In effect, reality is a kind of tabula rasa. One might imagine that reailty is just waiting for us to "paint" our emotions on each fact of reality. For example, we paint fear on snakes, we paint anger on our parents, we paint bordom on our job, we paint frusteration on our children. Ask yourself, why are some afraid of spiders and other not afraid? Is there something inherently fearful about spiders? Not at all. People afraid of spiders have painted fear on spiders. While some people have painted love on spiders. Spiders, without a story or meaning, are completely neutral.
So, if we want to change our lives, one method is to change the meaning of the facts in our life situation. We do this by telling ourselves stories about our life. What stories do you continually tell yourself. How did you learn this story? Why do you continue to tell this story? Why not tell a different story and change the meaning of the life that you live? Why not tell a more positive story.
Focusing on a Subset of Facts in the World
You become what you continually think about. The law of attration is about deciding what you want in your life and then conscioiusly focusing on those things. Eventually your focus is so complete and self-reinforcing that your life completely changes. You reinterprete every fact in your life in terms of the thing you are focused on. The Reticular Activation System in your brain causes you to notice the things you are focuing on. For example, if you just bought a red Volvo, you might find that you notice every red Volvo on the freeway during your commute to work everyday. Oh yeah, and and another thing...
